Industry Day 2007
Industry Day 2007
In conjunction with the 15th International Conference on Conceptual Structures (ICCS 2007) and ICOS 2007 (International Conference in Organisational Semiotics)
July 23rd, 2007, Sheffield Hallam University, UK
Industry Day will be devoted to discussions of practical problems dealing with concept modeling and applications in industry, both service and manufacturing. The agenda for the day includes:
Invited Speakers:
-
Michael Uschold (bio) (The Boeing Company - Phantom Works) will discuss
the kinds of conceptual structures and tools available for industry applications.
“Ontology-like” things have given rise to much confusion among those attempting to organize, classify,
and use knowledge in business and industry. There is a great deal of confusion over terms and where
to apply them. Confusion reflects ill-defined notions that are used different ways by different communities.
Meta-Model, schema, ontology, glossary, taxonomy, thesaurus, controlled vocabulary, data dictionary,
data model, and other terms are used variously by software and systems engineers, data modelers, and
enterprise architects. Getting control over the use of natural language and leveraging different levels of formality
for information technologies may lead to such useful tools as automatic generation of text from logical definitions,
automatic generation of logical definitions from well-crafted text, better knowledge acquisition and sharing, and
improved development lifecycles.
-
Keith Hawker (bio) (Metatomix)
Companies are increasingly frustrated that they have data to make critical decisions, but the
data is scattered across many different systems. Traditional data integration approaches are beginning to fail as
complexity and the volume of data increases, and a fundamental gap between the business users and the IT community
is emerging. Semantic technology provides a ground-breaking approach that can bridge this gap. By exploiting
next generation web standards to build semantic services, data is given clear meaning, turning the jumble of disparate
data into a common understanding providing business users real actionable insights. Keith will discuss what is
required to implement practical semantic services within an existing enterprise architecture without having to alter
the architecture, and how to develop knowledge based applications that exploit these semantic services. Through field
examples, this presentation will use case study material from a range of different projects to illustrate how
ground-breaking applications can be delivered through the deployment of semantic services.
Activities
-
Keynote addresses by Mike Uschold and Keith Hawker.
-
Demonstrations of new and recently released software applications for industrial
use, including the Metatomix suite and Oracle's implementation of Pierce's
Phaeron..
-
Papers on topics related to conceptual modeling and logics; modeling,
representation, and visualization; methodologies and approaches for systems
engineering; knowledge acquisition; issues in shared semantics and pragmatics;
deployment and maintenance, standards, and compliance issues; and Semantic Web
applications.
-
A panel discussion on "Corporate Impediments to Developing and
Deploying Conceptual Structures." In keeping with the ID focus, this
will address limitations to the adoption of ontologies (and taxonomies,
thesauri, dictionaries, and such) by organizations such as private
enterprise, universities, and other groups that could use ontologies for
competitive advantage. Discussions will address understanding, acceptance,
and funding for conceptual structures, including lack of tools, quality of
training, and ways to gain in-roads with domain experts. Focus is on
possible solutions.
Important Dates
